Five things to factor in before you travel to the Turks & Caicos Islands

The Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) are one of those bucket list destinations – you simply need to make the time to visit and savour the island’s perfect blend of natural beauty, opulence, and deep relaxation.

For first time visitors to TCI, here are five important considerations before you make your trip.

Best time of year to visit

The most popular months to visit Turks and Caicos is between December and April. This is when the weather is at its sunny best making it ideal for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. The off-peak season is June to November, where you can score some great deals, but note you also run the risk of hurricanes during this time.

Getting there

Most travellers arrive by plane, but there are also cruise ports in TCI. There are direct flights from several US cities, including Miami, Boston, Atlanta, and New York, along with Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and London. Formerly the Providenciales International Airport, but renamed the Howard Hamilton International Airport in 2023, the airport also operates regional flights from Provo to Grand Turk, South Caicos and Salt Cay.>

Alternatively, take a ferry between the islands. Grand Turk has a cruise port, making it another major travel hub for international visitors to TCI.

Public transport is non-existent on TCI. Taxis are available but can work out to be expensive, with each journey on Provo costing on average $30. Many people staying for more than a few days often prefer to rent a car or jeep, with hire fees varying from $40 to $100 per day. Scooters, bicycles and walking are also great ways to get around, especially on the smaller islands.

Higher costs

TCI is more expensive in comparison to other Caribbean islands. There are limited budget options across TCI, especially Provo, which is renowned for its opulent lifestyle options.

Expect to pay in the region of $200 and $400 per night for mid-range accommodation, while a high end resort will set you back at least $500 per night.

A three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant will cost around $100–$150, excluding wine. Beer at a bar costs around $7–$10. Activities such as a snorkelling tour costs between $100–$200 for each person, while the daily car hire fee is $40–$100.

Currency

Although TCI is a British Overseas Territory, its official currency is the US dollar. While some of the larger establishments, such as resorts, supermarkets, branded shops and car hire places all allow you to pay by card, many smaller establishments and taxis will only take cash.

Make sure you therefore bring enough dollars with you to cover you for the duration of your stay. There are local banks where you can convert your money into the local currency, but the exchange rates tend to be poor.
